The story

Most aviation museums keep their planes behind velvet ropes and pretend history stopped in 1945. Four miles west of downtown Missoula, you walk right into an operational Forest Service base where crews parachute out of airplanes into flaming pine needles for a living. This is the largest active smokejumper base in the United States, and the free visitor center doesn't hide the mechanics of the job: you are standing inside a working facility where federal wildland firefighters pack their own chutes and inspect Kevlar padding before taking off.

The guided tour takes you directly into the parachute loft, where hundreds of yards of nylon hang overhead while jumpers inspect, fold, and rig every seam by hand. Because smokejumpers are personally responsible for their own survival gear, the loft feels equal parts high-stakes rigging facility and industrial tailor shop. You will also step inside a restored 1930s wooden fire lookout tower relocated to the site, compare vintage hand tools with modern dispatch radios, and walk past the national memorial honoring smokejumpers lost in the line of duty.

The real draw of visiting during peak fire season (June through August) is that the public tours do not pause for real operations. If a lightning strike ignites a remote ridge in the surrounding mountains, an alarm sounds and the ready room springs to life. You might be examining a historical display one minute and standing back to watch a squad load heavy suits onto a waiting plane on the runway the next.
