Entry No. 37 — the Louisville file — filed under: speakeasy

Maddox & Rose Marketplace

Tucked away behind NuLu's Main Street, Maddox & Rose is a custom scent bar with over 75 scent oils ranging from Kentucky bourbon to fresh melon.

The story

Slip off East Main Street behind NuLu’s main storefronts and you’ll find a workshop that looks like an apothecary crossed with a speakeasy lounge. There’s no traditional bar counter slinging draught beer; instead, a 30-person bar top holds a lineup of over 75 tiny oil bottles ranging from local Kentucky bourbon notes to fresh melon.

The setup lets you take on the role of an amateur chemist. You pick out a vessel, work your way through wall displays and oil vials, and blend a custom fragrance profile for a soy candle or body spray. You pour the hot wax yourself, but soy wax demands patience—it needs roughly two hours to cool and cure before you can take it home.

That lingering delay is built into the design. Instead of pushing you out the door while your glass cools, the space encourages you to slow down, crack open a canned cocktail, and move over to a vintage lounge stocked with board games.

What it's like

Head down the corridor to Suite 104 and claim a stool at the central bar. Staff will walk you through sniffing test strips, picking out your jar, and mixing your chosen fragrance oils into the hot wax. Since candles take roughly 90 minutes to two hours to set, bring a friend, buy a canned drink on-site, and grab a board game in the lounge while you wait—or wander the surrounding block and return before closing to collect your jar.

The move: Sit at the 30-person scent bar with canned cocktails, pick out custom vessels, blend your own custom soy candle or body spray, and play board games in the vintage lounge while your candle sets.

Good to know

Do I need a reservation?

Walk-ins are accepted, but space at the 30-person scent bar fills up quickly on weekends, so reserving a spot online ahead of time is recommended.

How long does a candle take to cool?

Blending and pouring takes about 30 to 45 minutes, but the soy wax needs roughly 1.5 to 2 hours to solidify before it can be transported.

Are drinks available on-site?

Yes, they sell canned cocktails and other beverages to sip while you blend or hang out in the lounge.

What if I don't want to make a candle?

You can use the exact same 75+ fragrance oils to custom-blend room sprays or body sprays, which require no cooling wait time.
