Burks Family Cemetery in Springs Shopping Center
A tiny 19th-century private pioneer family graveyard completely enclosed inside a square ring of manicured tall red bushes right in the middle of a busy strip mall parking lot.
The story
In the early 1800s, long before strip malls, drive-thrus, and asphalt consumed St. Matthews, the Burks family were wealthy farmers working the land at Breckenridge and Dutchmans Lanes. Like many prominent land-owning families of the era, they buried their dead on their own acreage. But as Louisville pushed eastward and suburban commercial developments swallowed up historic farmsteads, the land was sold off and paved over.
Kentucky law strictly protects historic burial sites, meaning developers couldn't simply bulldoze or relocate the pioneer graves when constructing the Springs Shopping Center. Unable to build over the plot, contractors paved the parking lot right up to the burial plot's boundary, stranding a tiny island of 19th-century history in a sea of painted parking lines.
To keep suburban shoppers from staring directly at 200-year-old marble headstones while running errands, a dense square perimeter of tall red bushes was planted around the perimeter. The result is a surreal spatial clash: inches from idling sedans and delivery vans sits a preserved pioneer plot encased behind a wrought-iron gate.

Pull into the Springs Shopping Center at 994 Breckenridge Lane and scan the middle of the parking lot across from Shaheen's. At first glance, you'll just see a neatly trimmed, boxy square hedge block. Walk over toward the postal mailbox, and you'll spot a small gap deliberately cut into the evergreen bushes. Peer through the wrought-iron gate inside to see 1800s weather-worn marble headstones resting quietly against a backdrop of fresh blacktop and retail signage. It takes five minutes, costs nothing, and is ignored by nearly everyone around you.
