Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest

The story

In 1929, Isaac W. Bernheim—a German immigrant who made his fortune selling I.W. Harper bourbon in Louisville—bought up 14,000-plus acres of logged-over, worn-out land in Bullitt and Nelson counties. His idea was simple enough: give the people of Kentucky a massive, protected tract of nature, completely free of charge. Today, the reserve spans over 16,000 acres, acting as a massive biological barrier against the light pollution crawling south from Louisville's urban sprawl.

While most visitors troop in during daylight to stare at the native trees or hunt for Thomas Dambo’s giant troll sculptures, the forest shifts into something significantly stranger once the sun drops. Designated as a dark-sky sanctuary, Bernheim turns off its internal footprint and runs targeted after-dark excursions into areas off-limits to standard daylight wandering. Naturalists lead small groups into places like Ashlock Hollow using green laser pointers to slice through unblemished night skies, calling out constellations that city lights normally obliterate.

Depending on the season, the dark-sky programming gets bizarrely specific. Early summer brings Firefly Hikes through wet meadows where thousands of synchronized *Photinus* beetles blink in rhythm, while late summer and fall moonlit hikes trek deep into remote prairie remnants to listen for coyotes and nocturnal raptors. It’s a rare slice of pitch-black Kentucky wilderness sitting less than thirty miles from the interstate.
