Old Town Music Hall Silent Films with the Mighty Wurlitzer

The story

In 1921, this modest building opened on Richmond Street as the El Segundo State Theater. When Hollywood added synchronized soundtracks to film reels a decade later, theaters nationwide ripped out their pipe organs or dumped them in scrap heaps. But in the late 1960s, two musicians salvaged a 1925 Mighty Wurlitzer from a doomed movie palace in Long Beach, hauled it into this 188-seat room, and spent years hand-wiring it back to life.

Calling it an organ is an understatement—it is effectively a pneumatic orchestra tucked behind the walls. A single four-keyboard console controls over 2,600 pipes along with an actual grand piano, marimba, xylophone, drums, and cymbals mounted throughout the theater. Co-founder Bill Field sat at those keys nearly every weekend for 52 years, coaxing acoustic thunder out of the room until his passing in 2020.

Where modern revival houses focus on digital scans and silent room etiquette, Old Town Music Hall treats cinema like a contact sport. Before the main film begins, you get a warm-up sequence of ragtime and jazz, complete with projected vintage slides for audience sing-alongs. Then the house lights cut, and a single organist uses thousands of pipes to make century-old silent footage vibrate straight through your seat.
