You wouldn't expect a 1950 outdoor theater on Merriam Lane to set a global technology benchmark, but Boulevard Drive-In quietly pulled off a strange flex: it became the first drive-in theater in the world to install a 4K digital projection system. While most surviving drive-ins scrape by on low-lumen bulbs and faded screens, Boulevard blasts ultra-sharp video against the Kansas night sky, proving that mid-century cinema culture doesn't have to look like a smeared VHS tape.

That stubborn commitment to the venue was driven by Samuel "Wes" Wesley Neal, the theater's longtime operator who kept Boulevard running for decades until his death in 2024 at age 96. As real estate developers across the country systematically bulldozed drive-ins to build strip malls and warehouses, Neal held the line in Kansas City, modernizing the projection tech without destroying the outdoor lot's mid-century character.

The property operates on a weird shift schedule. By night, you get double features, broadcast watch parties, and seasonal horror runs like "Terror on the Plains." When morning comes, the screen goes dark and the gravel lot turns into a Swap N' Shop flea market, where people hunt for bargains in the same spaces where cars were parked for midnight movies hours earlier.
