The story
Tucked inside a mundane commercial suite off Brookville Road on Indy’s Eastside, GRT Hot Glass Studios hides a blast furnace operation behind a nondescript door. Founded and run as a family hot-glass studio, the space operates less like a polished gallery and more like a working industrial shop where liquid silica glows inside furnaces holding temperatures at 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Rather than forcing you to watch from behind a safety glass barrier, the studio hands you a long steel pipe and puts you directly in front of the heat. You learn the constant rhythm of rolling the pipe back and forth across a marver or bench arm so gravity doesn't yank molten glass onto the floor, using wet wooden blocks, jacks, and tweezers to pinch and twist colorful glass into flowers, birds, or drinkware before the material sets cold and brittle.
What it's like
Expect a working shop where radiant furnace heat hits you in the face the second you walk through the door. You’ll be working side-by-side with an instructor who guides your pipe into the crucible and helps you manipulate hot glass with hand tools. Wear closed-toe shoes and natural cotton clothing—synthetics will melt in the ambient blast—and don't expect to walk out holding your art; glass has to spend hours cooling slowly in an annealer oven to avoid shattering, meaning a return trip to pick up your finished work.
