Towering 70 feet over County Road 625 East, just half a mile south of U.S. 36, sits a massive triple-arch concrete trestle built in 1906 for the Big Four Railroad. Concrete structures built in that era carry an imposing weight, but this one in Avon comes with over a century of grim local lore attached to its foundations.
The folklore comes in two distinct, persistent strains. The first tells of a construction worker who slipped during the 1906 pour and was entombed alive inside the wet cement, left buried within the bridge's thick belly as the railway pushed forward. The second tells of a mother walking the high tracks at night who accidentally dropped her infant off the trestle into the White Lick Creek creekbed below, plunging after it in despair. Whether these are historical accidents or rural tall tales passed down around Hendricks County bonfires, the bridge earned a permanent nickname: Screaming Bridge.
