Old Montana Prison & Museums Complex (incl. Yesterday's Playthings)
Montana's territorial prison, opened in 1871 and later expanded by convict labor (its castle-like sandstone wall and cell blocks went up in the 1890s-1910s), held inmates until 1979 and now offers a self-guided walk through its stone cell blocks and yard. One ticket also covers a cluster of odd little museums on the grounds, including Yesterday's Playthings, Montana's antique doll and toy collection, plus an auto museum with more than 150 vehicles. The mix of grim cell blocks and whimsical toys in one stop is genuinely strange.
The story
In 1871, long before Montana achieved statehood, territorial authorities erected a lockup in Deer Lodge that would eventually be enlarged by the very men trapped inside it. Inmates quarried sandstone and laid the high, fortress-like perimeter wall that still casts a heavy shadow over Main Street. For over a century until its shutdown in 1979, the complex held Montana's most dangerous convicts inside narrow iron cages and bleak isolation cells.
The true strangeness of the site began after the state moved the prisoners down the road. Instead of razing the stone fortress, the town preserved the cell blocks and filled the surrounding prison yard with a jarring miscellany of private obsessions. Under the exact same ticket, you cross the yard from cold, echoing cell corridors into buildings housing over 150 classic cars and an overwhelming collection of antique dolls and vintage toys.
The result is an uncanny whiplash you won't find anywhere else along Interstate 90. You can stand inside a claustrophobic solitary confinement unit where men served hard time, then step across the threshold into roomfuls of glass-eyed 1860s china dolls staring back at you from display cases.
What it's like
You'll pull up to the imposing red sandstone fortress right on Main Street, pay a single entry fee, and receive a map for a self-guided walk. The self-guided nature means you're left mostly alone to explore dark, echoing cell blocks and walk along the catwalks. Crossing the central yard takes you directly into the climate-controlled display halls of classic automobiles and antique playthings. Keep in mind that while the prison cells and auto museum remain open year-round, Yesterday's Playthings and the secondary historical exhibits operate on a summer-only schedule.
