Big John: Cowboy Muffler Man
A 20-foot fiberglass cowboy has stood guard over Big John's Casino since 1999, hands hovering at his sides as if ready to draw pistols he never got. He's a genuine "Muffler Man" giant who spent his early years in Jamestown, North Dakota, earning nicknames like "Angle of the Dangle" before relocating to Great Falls. Whether or not the casino's doors are open, this classic mid-century roadside species still towers over the corner of 11th Ave S and 24th St S on the city's south side.
The story
He was cast in fiberglass in the early 1960s, part of a fleet of standard-issue mid-century giants deployed along American highway corridors to hijack the eyes of passing motorists. Before taking up position on a Great Falls street corner, this 20-foot cowboy logged his early decades in Jamestown, North Dakota. The locals there knew him well enough to bestow a few unvarnished nicknames—most notoriously "Angle of the Dangle"—before he was eventually uprooted and trucked west.
Since 1999, he’s anchored the parking lot outside Big John's Casino on the city's south side. Like every proper Muffler Man molded in that era, his palms are permanently cupped to hold advertising props—usually a muffler, axe, or pitchfork. Big John, however, carries nothing. With empty palms hovering right near his beltline, he looks less like a commercial mascot and more like an anxious gunfighter caught half a second before a quick-draw.
What it's like
You'll find Big John towering over the parking lot at the corner of 11th Avenue South and 24th Street South. You don't need to step inside the casino or drop money into a video poker machine to see him—he's outdoors, completely un-gated, and visible at all hours. Pull into the lot, stand right beneath his boots, and shoot your photo looking up past his outstretched hands into the Montana sky.
The move: Detour for a photo under Big John's outstretched hands, then continue downtown to the Sip 'n Dip Lounge for tiki drinks and live mermaids.
