The story
Tucked into an industrial pocket of Dearborn on Trowbridge Street, the Glass Academy doesn't look like an art gallery from the outside. Step inside the 14,000-square-foot hot shop, however, and you are immediately greeted by the blast furnace heat of a working glass studio. This isn't a passive museum where you admire delicate crystal behind velvet ropes—it's a hands-on, high-heat workshop where you handle glowing, 2,000-degree molten glass on the end of a steel blowpipe.
Family-owned and deeply rooted in Detroit's industrial craft ethos, the studio strips away the intimidation factor of traditional glassblowing. Instructors guide you through the tactile, precise mechanics of shaping liquid silica into solid form, whether you are gathering glass from the furnace for seasonal pumpkins or blowing hollow holiday ornaments. To balance out the heat, the academy added The Michigan Room, an onsite lounge serving drinks made with local ingredients like Detroit City Distillery spirits and Casamara Club botanical sodas.

Expect ambient heat the moment you enter the hot shop, especially near the open furnace doors. You will be assigned an instructor who stays at your elbow while you manipulate iron tools, roll molten gathers on metal tables, and blow into long steel pipes.
