Entry No. 1 — the Des Moines file — filed under: speakeasy
The Atlas Room
West Des Moines' newest speakeasy is hidden inside Serenity Couture Salon & Spa in the old Wells Fargo building. There's no password, but you have to figure out the entrance yourself: it runs through a barber chair and a massive door into a dark hallway, opening onto a warmly backlit lounge with plush sofas, jazz and big-band on a hi-fi, and world maps projected on the walls.
The story
You walk into Serenity Couture Salon & Spa near 7001 Westown Parkway—an unlikely address for a nightcap, set inside a former Wells Fargo bank now known as the Atlas Building. Between the hum of blow dryers and the scent of hair product, there is no sign that a cocktail lounge exists anywhere on the premises. But if you know where to look, you'll find the gatekeeper: a barber chair setup that acts as the physical puzzle you must work out to unlatch a massive hidden door.
Step through that heavy barrier and the bright salon lighting vanishes entirely. A dark hallway channels you into an intimate, dimly lit room filled with plush sofas piled high with throw pillows, big-band and jazz spinning through the hi-fi system, and the glow of world maps projected across the walls. It is a complete atmospheric pivot hidden in plain sight.
What it's like
Expect a tight, low-lit refuge built for lingering over globally inspired craft drinks. Because there is no kitchen inside, plan to eat dinner beforehand or hit one of the other restaurants in the Atlas Building before heading in. Doors open Tuesday through Saturday from 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM on a walk-in basis—showing up on a weeknight or early in the evening gives you the best chance at landing a couch before the small space fills up.
The move: Make it a puzzle date: arrive without telling each other how you think you get in, and the first one to work out the barber-chair entrance picks the first round. Sink into the oversized throw-pillow sofas under the projected maps and play 'name that country.'
📍 Before you go You'll find it inside Serenity Couture Salon & Spa, on the ground floor of the Atlas Building (the old Wells Fargo bank) near 7001 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, with surface parking around the building. It's open to the public and there's no password, though the lounge is small and dimly lit, so a weeknight or early evening and reserving ahead beat fighting a weekend crowd. There's no full kitchen here, so eat dinner first or pair it with one of the restaurants elsewhere in the Atlas Building, then come over for craft cocktails and a nightcap.
