SiNaCa Studios School of Glass
A nonprofit glass school set inside a renovated old gas station on Fort Worth's Magnolia Avenue. Their two-hour Experience workshop is capped at two to four people, so a couple gets serious one-on-one furnace time. The story
Magnolia Avenue used to feed fuel to cars; now building 1013 feeds 2,000-degree heat to molten silica. SiNaCa Studios took an old service station on Fort Worth's Near Southside and gutted the bay into a working hot shop, studio, and non-profit gallery dedicated to keeping glass craft accessible in North Texas.
You aren't watching an artisan from behind a velvet rope. The studio runs deliberately tight workshops—capped at four people max—where you handle the steel pipes yourself. You roll raw glass gathers into crushed color chips (frit), shape the white-hot mass on a marver table, and supply the breath that expands a molten lump into a finished piece under the hands-on watch of an instructor.
What it's like
Expect ambient heat, the roar of the furnaces, and immediate hands-on work. You and your partner or small group (at least two people required to book) pick your color palettes before taking turns at the blowpipes to craft two items each—a colored mini paperweight and your choice of a small bowl, vase, or tumbler. The main catch: you will not leave with your creations. Glass requires a slow cooling cycle in an annealer so it doesn't shatter from thermal shock, meaning you'll need to return to the Magnolia gallery about five business days later to collect your cold glass.
