The story
Tucked away on Chancellor Row in the Design District, Dallas Glass Art looks like any other nondescript industrial warehouse from the curb. What makes this hot shop worth knowing about is its setup: billed as the only female-owned glassblowing studio in DFW, it skips the passive gallery demo setup entirely in favor of hands-on furnace time.
Instead of watching from behind a barrier, you are handed a blowpipe and brought straight up to the glory hole. You gather a glowing ball of molten glass, roll it in colored frit, and keep the pipe constantly turning so gravity doesn't pull your bowl or paperweight into a lopsided blob.
What it's like
You will feel the radiant heat as soon as you step into the working shop floor. Wear natural cotton layers and closed-toe shoes—synthetic fabrics don't handle furnace proximity well. Instructors work one-on-one with you to control the gathering and shaping, but keep in mind you will not leave with a souvenir in hand that day. Thermal shock will shatter uncooled glass, so every piece goes into an annealer to sit overnight and cools gradually until it's ready for pickup about five days later.
