The story

When occultist D.G. Nelson opened this shop back in 1918 at 611 North State Street, Chicago was full of self-proclaimed mystics and private esoteric societies. Nelson didn't build a novelty shop for casual tourists; he set out to create a permanent institutional archive and supply house for serious practitioners of the occult arts. Over a century and a few relocations later—first migrating to Wicker Park before landing at 3031 North Milwaukee Avenue in Avondale—it stands as plausibly the oldest continuously operating occult shop in the United States.

You won't find vague commercial wellness trends on these shelves. The store operates as both a shop and a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit known as the Occult Spiritual Society, run by staff who are active practitioners in esoteric traditions. Inventory centers on serious practical work: hand-blended ritual oils, mojo bags, custom spell candles, herbal tinctures, and specialized altar items. Behind glass cases sit rare, out-of-print grimoires, early Hermetic texts, and hard-to-find divination decks.

What keeps the storefront going isn't trend-seekers; it's a dedicated local community. On the first and third Wednesday evenings of every month, the shop hosts a recurring social where local ceremonial magicians, tarot readers, and esoteric scholars gather to talk craft, study historic lineages, and exchange notes. It remains what Nelson intended in 1918: a quiet, working sanctuary operating right on Milwaukee Avenue.
