The story
When architect Louis I. Simon designed the Music Box in 1929, he didn't build a massive 3,000-seat movie palace like the downtown syndicates. He spent $110,000 on an atmospheric neighborhood venue styled after an Italian palazzo courtyard, complete with a dark blue cove-lit ceiling rigged with dimming pinprick stars and drifting plaster clouds. Built specifically for the new era of sound pictures, it lacked a stage, though the builders quietly carved out organ chambers just in case 'talkies' proved to be a passing fad. Talkies stayed, but decades later, house organist Dennis Scott still plays pre-show music through a custom digital organ housed in an original 1929 Kimball console.
After a brief detour in the late 1970s screening kung fu double features and adult cinema, the theater was revived in 1983 as Chicago's premier repertory house. That was when the midnight slot took on a life of its own. While the rest of Southport Avenue shuts down, Friday and Saturday nights transform the 700-plus-seat main auditorium into a sanctuary for cult cinema: 35mm prints of The Rocky Horror Picture Show accompanied by the Midnight Madness shadowcast, chaotic screenings of Tommy Wiseau's The Room, and deep-cut horror retrospectives.
