The story

When Charlotte tax collector Archibald Frew finished his Federal-style home in 1815, his neighbors didn't applaud—they nicknamed it 'Frew's Folly' and waited for him to go broke. Spending a fortune on imported French hand-blocked wallpaper, hand-carved fireplaces, and bright 'Paris Yellow' exterior trim in an isolated rural backwater of dirt-floor log cabins looked like sheer vanity. Frew did eventually run into financial trouble, but the home stayed in his extended family tree—the Frews, Caldwells, and Davidsons—for five generations until 1986. Today, what was once a 900-acre plantation has shrunk to nine lush, heavily shaded acres pinned directly against the noisy sprawl of North Tryon Street.

The site carries a much deeper weight than its surviving Dufour wallpaper and restored millwork, using its museum space to center both the landowning families and the enslaved people, like Cherry and Nat, whose unpaid labor built and sustained the property. But once night falls, Rosedale becomes better known as one of Mecklenburg County's most active paranormal hubs. Investigators regularly document full-body apparitions on the lawn, disembodied footsteps in the corridors, erratic EMF spikes, and voices recorded inside the 1815 cellar. You didn't hear it from us, but even long-time staff members acknowledge that certain original 19th-century occupants never quite vacated the premises.
