The story

The original Castle Hill site was built on the bones of a botched 1980s condominium project named Le Palestra, whose terraced concrete foundations sat abandoned until founder Andi Scull launched the art park in 2011. For eight years, anyone with a can of Krylon could scramble up the concrete slabs overlooking downtown Austin to leave a tag, a mural, or a political plea. In January 2019, the hillside officially closed so developers could pave over the paint layers for a luxury condo development called 'The Colorfield'—which, in a quiet nod to corporate irony, built a single permanent mural wall into its multi-million-dollar residential design.

After a six-year hiatus, the gallery resurrected in late November 2025 at 741 Dalton Lane on Carson Creek Ranch, sitting directly under the departure paths of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Rather than leasing, the team bought the property outright under HOG Carson Creek LLC to shield the park from future gentrification. Austin architecture firm Chioco Design laid out the concrete walls so that the sprawling structures spell out 'H-O-P-E' in 180-foot letters from an aerial view, handing departing flight passengers a parting look at fresh spray paint before take-off.

Because it operates as a working legal graffiti park, the landscape shifts constantly as street artists and walk-up visitors cover yesterday's tags with fresh enamel. The new campus pairs its outdoor mural walls with designated public practice spaces where anyone can buy a can at the on-site art shop and lay down paint, alongside a 6,000-square-foot indoor gallery, coffee bar, and repurposed shipping containers. It's more structured than the old scrambled hillside, but the aerosol haze and jet engines roaring overhead keep the raw energy intact.
